Graduate Training
Our vision is of students and academics working together within a single research community to address major issues of the twenty-first century. We believe that graduate training should be about students participating actively in our research debates and our academic activities, alongside faculty. We think students should be given the flexibility to agree the right training for them as individuals. We aim to provide graduates with a package of skills that prepare them for professional as well as academic life.
We have created an innovative training programme that embodies our vision. It recognises the many diverse ways that graduates develop their skills. All graduate students will work with their supervisors to select what’s right for them from a menu of activities. There will be opportunities too for students and supervisors to suggest new menu items. Each student will build up a portfolio of skills every year. The package will contain a blend of different kinds of activity, listed separately in the training menu. These diverse lists represent the range of skills needed in future professional or academic life. As you would imagine, in taught, and especially professional postgraduate degrees, you will be given specific guidance on what activities you need to undertake for those qualifications. Of course, professional degrees often have special requirements, and, in those cases, students will follow the specific classes prescribed for them.
